How to get the most out of your septic system:

  • Do not flush old medication
  • Do not put old medication in the sink
  • Do not take showers and run the dishwasher/washing machine at the same time
  • Do not dump cleaners and excessive amounts of bleach in the toilet or sink
  • Do not empty grease down the sink
  • Check toilets to make sure they are not leaking

  • Run water softeners to a ditch or or dry well (VA only)
  • Have your septic tank pumped once every 3-5 years
  • Limit use of a garbage disposal
